Sara Burns, Director, Triangle - creators of the Outcomes Star™

“Throughout 2019, Pathways to Independence collaborated with us at Triangle to co-create a version of the Outcomes Star for Unaccompanied Asylum-Seeking Children (UASC). It felt like the culmination of many years of discussion and sharing of ideas, from when I first met Pathways founder Alice Conroy 10 years ago while we were developing the Young Person’s Star. I still remember her proposing creative ways to weave the Star in with the local authority pathway for young people, always focused on what worked for the young people. Pathways used the Star for many years and found innovative ways to make it work for them, but over several years told us how it wasn’t ideally suited to UASC and how good it would be to have a tailored version. Pathways are a relatively small charity that has a big impact, and I was delighted when they secured support from the Home Office to create the new Star, as part of a programme involving a number of local authorities.

“The Social Work Department from the University of Sussex formed a partnership with Pathways to Independence in 2018.  Since this time, a number of our Social Work students, both from the MA and BA programmes have been placed with Pathways to undertake their practice learning experience.  Feedback from students and staff has been extremely positive and moreover students have spoken positively about the excellent experience they have gained in direct work with young people of a refugee and asylum seeker background...The work that Pathways does is an invaluable resource and our successful partnership has been driven by the ethos and ethics of Pathways to improve the lives of young people.” - Karen Okuefuna-Budd, Director of Practice Learning, Sussex University

“I learnt the work done by PTI UK is complex, challenging and rewarding as they not only provide accommodation but support across all aspects of a young person’s life. I am pleased that I had the opportunity to do my placement at PTI UK as they offered me wide range of learning opportunities whether this was through e-learning, suitability interviews, shadowing key-workers/professionals, attending team meetings,  and trainings/inductions. The team I worked in were welcoming, cohesive and supported me throughout my placements offering me guidance and advice which made it easier for me settling in placement. It was easy to communicate with PS, PE and the team whether this was through phone call, message, email or 1-1 conversation; I found the group forum and team calendar helpful in planning ahead, communicating and informing the team about my whereabouts during placement hours…”

“Before I started the placement I was excited about the new opportunity and all the learnings I was hoping to gain, but I was also naturally nervous as I did not have previous knowledge of working with refugees and asylum seekers. Additionally, I knew I was about to join quite a busy team and I was worried about how well I will be able to adapt to it. However, all these initial concerns vanished after the first few days spent on placement as everyone at PTI showed to be well organised, professional, friendly and very well prepared to have students with them; they made me feel welcomed to the team and helped me to become confident in my new role. I was offered a lot of support, relevant training and shadowing from my supervisor and the rest of the team…”

“Pathways was undoubtedly one of the most impressive and rewarding collaborations, due to the depth of knowledge of their workers and the positive relationships they had with the young people. They are real experts in the field, which is exactly what we need to recreate a Star that speaks to and reflects the reality of people in a sector.”
