Triangle recommendation.

“Throughout 2019, Pathways to Independence collaborated with us at Triangle to co-create a version of the Outcomes Star for Unaccompanied Asylum-Seeking Children (UASC). It felt like the culmination of many years of discussion and sharing of ideas, from when I first met Pathways founder Alice Conroy 10 years ago while we were developing the Young Person’s Star. I still remember her proposing creative ways to weave the Star in with the local authority pathway for young people, always focused on what worked for the young people. Pathways used the Star for many years and found innovative ways to make it work for them, but over several years told us how it wasn’t ideally suited to UASC and how good it would be to have a tailored version. Pathways are a relatively small charity that has a big impact, and I was delighted when they secured support from the Home Office to create the new Star, as part of a programme involving a number of local authorities.

I am one of the founding directors of Triangle and lead on the development of new versions of the Outcomes Star and have collaborated with well over 60 organisations to create 40 versions over 15 years. Pathways was undoubtedly one of the most impressive and rewarding collaborations, due to the depth of knowledge of their workers and the positive relationships they had with the young people they supported, which made it easier for us to get the engagement of service users in the co-creation of the Planning Star. They are real experts in the field, which is exactly what we need to recreate a Star that speaks to and reflects the reality of people in a sector.

Even now the Planning Star is published, we’re continuing to explore collaboration with Pathways to train people in its use, as we recognise that UASC is a specialist sector and people would be well served by training from people who really understand the immigration process and impact on young people. It was helpful having their new director participating recently in a round table discussing the Outcomes Star for homelessness, and the perspective that she bought. I’m looking forward to continuing working with Pathways, hopefully for many years to come.”
