What We Do

What we do.

For over two decades, Pathways to Independence UK has worked with young people facing exclusion and disadvantage. We now focus on community impact, social justice, and partnerships that amplify lived experience and shape fairer systems.

“Pathways To Independence have been there for me, they have been so friendly, helping me begin my life in the UK. I’m thankful how they have supported and cared for me.

— Pathways Young Person

Since 2003, Pathways to Independence has worked alongside young people facing exclusion, disadvantage, and systemic barriers. Our work has always been guided by the principle that lived experience should shape practice, services, and systems.

Today, our focus is lighter, more community-based, and rooted in the values that shaped our legacy. Through PTI CIC, we develop projects that:

✦ Mentoring & Outreach

Creating opportunities for young people and young adults to connect with positive role models, explore their strengths, and find belonging. Outreach projects may focus on those who feel outside of their community, helping to reduce isolation and build pathways toward inclusion.

✦ Knowledge Sharing & Systemic Influence

Drawing on our history of working with local authorities, universities, and community partners, we share insights from lived experience to influence policy and practice. This includes developing and sharing tools like the UASC Outcome Star – Planning Star™, and contributing to systemic conversations about equity and inclusion.

✦ Creative & Participatory Approaches

Using creative methods, including storytelling where appropriate, we support young people to reflect, share perspectives, and contribute to wider understanding. Storytelling can take many forms — from spoken word to mother tongue expression, to digital stories — and is always shaped by the community involved.

✦ Community Partnerships

Collaborating with universities, local authorities, and grassroots organisations, we collaborate to build inclusive models of best practice that can be adapted and replicated across different contexts.

At the heart of it all is a simple belief: that lived experience is powerful, and when amplified, it can drive real change

“I respect Pathways because if I need help they always support me and look out for what is best for me”

We work with…

Our work continues to focus on those who experience exclusion, isolation, or systemic barriers. Building on our 22-year legacy, we now prioritise support for:

✦ Young people from asylum-seeking and refugee backgrounds navigating new systems and cultural transitions.

✦ Care-experienced young people who benefit from connection, mentoring, and trauma-informed support.

✦ Neurodivergent young people and young adults where neuro-affirmative approaches create space for belonging and voice.

✦ Young people and young adults with mental health needs such as anxiety, depression, or trauma-related experiences, where peer connection and community projects can reduce isolation.

✦ Young adults facing marginalisation or exclusion, including those who feel outside of their community and disconnected from opportunities..

“Here is fantastic. I slept last night and I have a lovely room, I feel safe”

Our Ambition

To carry forward the lessons of our 22-year legacy, while creating flexible, community-rooted projects that respond to real needs, amplify lived experience, and help build fairer, more inclusive systems.

“My culture is different…so happy about Pathways, they like my language and culture.”
