Research Projects
Our contributions to research projects
Research has always been a vital part of Pathways to Independence’s work.
By contributing evidence, sharing lived experience, and collaborating with partners, we have helped shape policy, practice and systemic change for young people facing exclusion and disadvantage.
Our research projects focus on amplifying young people’s voices, ensuring that their perspectives are at the centre of decisions that affect them. Whether through legal research, evaluations of national schemes, or participatory projects, our aim is to ensure systems are more equitable, inclusive, and responsive to the needs of those they serve.
Systemic Delays in UASC Asylum Decision-Making
Partner: Elder Rahimi Solicitors & Kent Law Clinic
Focus: Understanding the impact of delays in asylum decisions for unaccompanied asylum-seeking children (UASC).
Young people supported by PTI took part in this research, which highlighted the harm caused by lengthy decision-making processes and the systemic barriers young people face.

The National Transfer Scheme (NTS) Evaluation
Commissioned by: South East Strategic Partnership for Migration
Focus: Evaluating the NTS from the perspective of children and young people.
The evaluation found that overall, experiences of transfer were positive. However, the research emphasised that for transfers to work well, children must be actively involved in every stage of the process — from the decision to transfer through to arrival in new placements. Involvement in decisions is not only best practice but a fundamental human right.
